Shubman Gill created history on Saturday (August 2) by becoming the highest run-scorer in a single India-England Test series. Gill scored 753* runs in five matches, surpassing former England captain Graham Gooch’s 35-year-old record of 752 runs set in the 1990 series. Leading the Indian side in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill showcased remarkable consistency. Before the final Test, Gill had already amassed 722 runs.
To break Gooch’s record, he needed at least 31 more. Although he fell 10 runs short with just 21 in the first innings, he made up for it in the second innings on day three, crossing the milestone with the required 10 runs.
Gill also surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s record as an Indian captain for most runs in a Test series. Gavaskar had scored 732 runs across six matches against the West Indies in 1978-79. At 25, Gill now holds the Indian record and is within striking distance of Don Bradman’s captaincy record of 810 runs in a series set during the 1936-37 Ashes.
