Arvind Kejriwal stepped down today as the Chief Minister of Delhi, and Atishi, a senior AAP leader currently serving as the Delhi Education Minister, will assume the top position following Mr. Kejriwal’s resignation. Having recently been granted bail in the Delhi liquor police case, Mr. Kejriwal declared that he would not resume his duties until his party is re-elected in the next state elections, calling it the “people’s order.” During a meeting of AAP MLAs, Dilip Pandey suggested that Mr. Kejriwal nominate the next Chief Minister, and upon proposing Atishi’s name, all party members endorsed her as the new leader of the legislature. Atishi, an Oxford University alumna and Rhodes scholar, holds significant responsibilities in the Delhi government overseeing Education and the Public Works Department, having played a pivotal role in the AAP’s educational reform efforts in the city’s schools.
